Root planing

For root planing, does the area have to always be anesthetized or no? Can root planing be done without local anesthetic? Thanks

Local anesthesia is not a “requirement” for SRP. However, generally speaking, patients do need some sort of pain control because infected gingiva is tender. If a patient is uncomfortable during treatment, it makes it hard to be thorough because they hurt. I’ve only encountered one patient who didn’t need local anesthesia or Oraqix.
