Saddle Stool

I started using a saddle stool for the first time about a week and a half ago. I am doing a 30 day rental of the Scandex Bjorn 400 series (http://www.scandex.us/bjorn/default.aspx). I mostly love it so far. I love the position it puts me in, my neck and shoulders feel better and I love how close I can get to the patient. My only problem is, if I have the chair tilted 15 degrees forward as recommended, my sit bones get so sore I can’t hardly make it through one patient. I’m wondering if this brand just doesn’t agree with me and I should try a different one? Or does this happen with all saddle stools and it just takes time to get used to it? Has anyone else experienced this?

I’ve had a saddle stool for about 6 months now. I recently attended an ergonomics seminar that had a great suggestion. When you’re sitting on the stool, you should be able to tuck your feet underneath the stool without falling. If you’re falling forward, you’ve got it tilted too far forward. When I started, it was uncomfortable because I did have it tilted too far forward in this way. Level the seat out a bit and try the “foot lift.” I’ve been comfortable since, and also noticed less fatigue.

When choosing an operator chair, I always recommend going to a dental conference, walking the floor, and checking out every chair company. Not all chairs will fit you. If you follow the manufacturer’s suggestions and it still doesn’t feel right, try another! I so like DeeDurden’s suggestions!
