I have worked with both a digital sensor and ScanX (phosphor plates). I’m a big fan of phosphor plates because so many patients have tori, active gag reflexes, small mouths, the list goes on. Plates are so much smaller than a sensor. In my personal experience, I have found that patients tolerate a plate better than a digital sensor. Mind you, I work for an office that gives me all of the time I need so scanning the plates does not put me behind schedule. A con is that the plates can be bent or scratched over time. However, replacing a plate is much cheaper than replacing a sensor, and no worries about a patient biting down on the wire. Just my humble opinion!

In comparison to direct digital sensors:

Pros: smaller, more flexible and resembles traditional film.

Cons: it’s not directly displayed on computer screen. I worked at a busy office with 10-15 dental assistants and often have to wait in line to use scanner.

I like both but prefer direct digital because less time is spent unbarriering sensors and leaving the room to scan.

I prefer Schick for Dexis for digital radiographs as you can see them immediately on the computer to check for possible re-takes. ScanX was nice for the flexibility but you don’t have instant results.
