I know I will mostly get 1099 from offices. Is there wage and tax concerns that I should consider when asking for an hourly rate or day rate? New to temping and could use some tried and true help from those more experienced at temping then me. I have been a hygienist for over 10 years. Thanks!
Please don’t accept a 1099 when you are temping, or ever, really. Dental hygienists aren’t independent contractors and should not receive a 1099. Even when temping, you are still under some sort of supervision, see the doctor’s patients, and use the doctor’s equipment, hence you are an employee (if only for a day) and should be paid with a W-2. If you accept a 1099, you will be paying your taxes on top of the employer’s taxes. Employers can face big penalties for this, and of course, you end up paying more, leaving you with less of a paycheck.
Whether you ask for an hourly rate or daily rate is up to you. I personally prefer an hourly rate. For really specific differences tax-wise, its probably best you ask a CPA. Do make sure you discuss your wage, how (W-2) and when you will be paid right off the bat, before seeing any patients. This can save you trouble and any confusion down the road.
