terminated due to 1 pt complaint

I have been working for a corporate office for nearly 6 months where everything has been great. Sure I have had maybe 2-3 pts say I was a little rough but to me its because the hygienist before wasn’t doing her TX correctly and it’s obvious when I see her perio maint. Anyhow I recently got a raise and review where the Dr said I was awesome. Then come in last week to be told I’m terminated because a pts mother called about the pt saw (that was in her 20s)and said I was making I inappropriate comments concerning the pt and her boyfriend and them having sex?! To which I was baffled I never speak about things like this with my patients! Apparently corporate pushed to fire me immediately though without an investigation or written accusation from that pt. The Dr had so little to say about it and didn’t even know the situation to explain it that I find it extremely unfair and unprofessional. My credentials and reputation are being slandered and the Dr didn’t even allow me to explain. The office manager called me shortly after crying sayin how unfair it is and the Dr didn’t want to do it but corporate didn’t like me in the first place because I’m not from this state and don’t fit in. Its a true nightmare and horrifying to think that if someone doesn’t like you they could so easily ruin your life. The only thing I could think is she was upset because the cleaning was a little difficult due to lack of routine maintenance severe gingivitis and refusal to receive anesthesia, and one of the most difficult pts I have ever treated due to extremely strong tongue and lips. Where do I go from here. How do I move on? Do i get a consultation for a lawsuit? Do I claim unemployment? Any advice would be great. Thanks

I agree with sue! It’s hard to please everyone.
I’ve had a patient yell at me and talk down to me because I suggested she let her PCP know that her BP was high when she was at the dentist. This was when I was filling in a corporate office. After that couple weeks in a corporate office….I knew I’d never ever want to work anywhere like that again. The quality of care was not there and they charged for every single procedure. It was $40 to Perio Chart!……I did it anyway. It was 30 minutes per patient. Herding patients in like cattle.
Also, if two to three patients have complained about being rough there are more that haven’t complained. I’ve had a rough hygienist work on me and my teeth were very clean. Lol. Take this as a learning experience and improve your techniques.
Good luck. See this as another door of opportunity has opened……not slammed in your face!!

I would definitely apply for unemployment insurance. They have to explain why you were terminated…if there are unfounded accusations, that is when I would consider a lawsuit.
As far as your professional future, I would try and shake this off. I honestly have yet to meet or talk to a hygienist that was/is truly happy working for a corporate dental business. You have been treated like you don’t matter, I say, take this as a learning experience and find somewhere to work that feels more like your fit, a home, if you will. 🙂
