Textbooks

Hi everyone! I’m starting the clinical portion of my schooling in a few weeks and I wanted to know what others’ opinions are in regards to renting or buying textbooks.I am on a
tight budget so renting will save money, but at the same time I wonder if most of the RDH’s on this page kept and still refer too their textbooks in time of need! Thank you!

I kept my textbooks and do occasionally refer to them for reference. I know some friends who sold theirs but I figured I invested into my education and career I might as well keep them. 🙂

I bought all of my books on half.com, which is an ebay affiliate. I literally saved hundreds of dollars! Now that I’m done with school, I’m reselling the ones that I don’t think I’ll ever need as a reference. Check out the website and compare prices!

I kept all my books except radiography and I wish I still had it! If you can buy the same exact book that the school is using then save some money and buy the used book. I still refer back to my books. I’ve even borrowed the new perio book from a current student to see what has changed compared with my book from 12 years ago. Only slight changes. Yes, I did read the whole borrowed book. Lol

After 31 years of practice, I have only held on to my pathology book.

I purchased through Amazon.com and saved a lot there. One thing to think about though is that editions are out of date almost the second you buy them so re-selling is nearly impossible. I checked with the upper class students to see which texts they really used as many, many were supplemental and used many 1-2x (so I borrowed from others). This saved me a lot of $. However, the books that I could reference in practice or for boards (Wilkins, Pharmacology, Radiology, Pathology) – I purchased and kept a few. I basically saved the notes I took from them rather than the text and only hung on to Wilkins. They really are out of date so fast that they aren’t that great to hang on to. Keep one good reference and you are good!

I held onto mine to have for reference if needed. In the eight years Ive been doing hygiene I have never used them. Whenever I have any questions I refer to the internet for answers. My youngest daughter just graduated college and I always got her textbooks on http://www.cheapesttextbooks.com. That site will give you all the areas where you can purchase new or used or rent whatever book you are looking for and compare prices of all available so you can choose what works best for you. Saved us huge money over the years!!! I have rented and bought through numerous companies from that site and have always had great experiences!
