Thumb/Wrist Pain

I think this question might have been answered a long time ago, but I couldn’t find it, I apologize. I have been noticing a significant amount of discomfort in my right thumb and wrist, which is the hand I instrument with. Now, whenever I grip anything, (a cup for example) and pick it up, it is pretty uncomfortable. Nothing unbearable, but enough to know that something might be wrong. I notice that I also sleep with my arms curled up so much that I wake up with one of my hands being numb, which I have always heard can lead to problems. Now with me working so much I’m afraid some damage is already being done. Should I start wearing a brace? Maybe even wearing a brace at night so that I’m able to keep it straight? Or should I have already gone to the doctor? Any pointers would be appreciated. Thank you!

A visit to the doctor might be in order. You want to do whatever possible to keep function in that money earning hand. 🙂

Go to this link below. Research all you can with this site and order the book Practicing Dentistry Pain Free. I have come full circle with changing my ergonomics and no longer have extreme pain every day. My hands aren’t going numb anymore etc. I also wear a Wrist Timer while working upon changing chairs and adjusting to chair correctly to purchasing second pair of better / different brand of loupes with motion sensor light.

I have ulnar compression in both elbows and experience wrist, thumb pain and numbness in my pinky. I have had two nerve studies done and the compression is not bad enough for surgery yet. I sleep with orthopedic splits on my arms to Keep my elbows straight at night and do ulnar nerve stretches periodically throughout the day. You can Google the stretches and find some over the counter arm braces on Amazon. I would suggest you go see a Dr. To figure out if it’s ulnar or medial nerve commission then do every non surgical treatment possible to manage it.
