We had the sales rep come in to go over the maintenance for the new touch cavitron. He said that they are training the new hygienist to avoid scaling & just cavitron as it takes enamel away. Is this something new? I was trained to cavitron the whole mouth then explore with the instrument and scale where necessary.
I haven’t seen enough valid research to support “just using an ultrasonic.” Until you see valid research, and a lot of it at that, I would keep doing what you are doing! I reached out to a few hygiene educators I know, who are very up to date on their research, and they teach to handscale after ultrasonic use. Not that I want to put down or undermine what dental reps say, but its best to leave how we treat patients up to professionals who are licensed based on a lot of valid research!
