Unsure of choosing the field

So I am at a point in my college career where it’s time for me to pick which major I want to go for and I’m thinking hygiene, but seeing all of these posts about a saturated market really discourages me. Should I go for it or would it be a waste of a degree? I am also going to do a dental assistant program soon so it looks good when applying to hygeine school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Before choosing any profession, you want to make sure you are certain about it. I would recommend shadowing several different hygienists to get a true feel for the field, as the education involved is quite the commitment! Dental hygiene is a very rewarding career if you love the science behind dentistry and caring for patients. What you have read about the hygiene field being saturated is true for many areas, but that doesn’t mean its impossible to find a job with persistence and effort. When there’s a will, there’s a way! Beginning your dental career as an assistant will give you a good look into the field as well. In my opinion, a degree in hygiene isn’t a waste if you love the preventive side to dentistry. Realize too, that there are more career options besides clinical hygiene; there’s sales, research, education, consulting, among other career paths. Here’s a good list from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association about alternate career paths: http://www.adha.org/professional-roles. Ultimately you have to decide what’s best for you and what you will be happy doing; no one can make that decision for you. I wish you the best of luck!
