What are Illinois laws regarding anesthesia ?

Our dentists frequently ask the hygienist to anesthetize their patients. Most of the time we oblige and do it for them. I refuse to do any children, and today I didn’t want to do an injection for one of the doctors (who apparently was freaking out and the assistant thought she was almost in tears). Can you give me any literature/laws on Illinois anesthetizing for hygienists?

I am a hygienist in Illinois. I am originally from West Virginia and there, you have to take the NERB Local Anesthesia board exam, which I did take. When I moved to Illinois, I spoke with the Board and they basically told me that in Illinois, you have to have taken a Local Anesthetic class from an accredited hygiene school, that contained lecture and clinical hours. If you follow the link I added, press “Ctrl” then the letter “F” to find, and type in Local Anesthetic and it will tell you. Or just make sure that link is for Section 1220.240 Prescribed Duties of Dental Hygienists, and go to section g. (lower case) and Local Anesthetic is in that section. The class requirements are in the second paragraph.

Hopefully this helps!!

In reading the Illinois Dental Practice Act, I couldn’t find anything prohibiting hygienists anesthetizing for doctors. To be sure, I have emailed the Illinois Board of Dentistry and am awaiting a reply. If or when they email back, I will add an answer of what they said. I also contacted the Chicago Dental Society, but because I’m not a member, they wouldn’t give me an answer.
