Since I’ve been practicing for well over 30 years; a lot! I started when gloves and masks were not required. There was no OSHA. I’ve been through dip tanks for x-Ray development – automated processors – phosphor plates – digital sensors. Maybe not the biggest , but one of the best changes has been in education with correlation between oral health and other systemic diseases.

I have been a practicing hygienist for 37 years–TECHNOLOGY is the biggest change and OSHA with gloves, mask, gowns, eye protection. No one would of ever thought to use an intraoral picture to educate a patient. Also I started with a belt driven handpiece.

Digital radiographs, and intra-oral pictures, which both have helped keep patients more informed/involved in their restorative needs.

Seems like slowly the scope of practice is increasing, now we can give local in most states and nitrous in some. Many states are also allowing a community dental hygienist who is able to go out to nursing homes, schools, etc too. Some states are also moving towards the advanced dental therapist model as well.

In addition to all of the technological advances, I think dental hygiene has changed the most in job availability. When I graduated in 1984, I was not worried IF I were going to find a job. The dentists were fighting over us… Salaries were competitive. There were not an over abundance of dental hygiene schools… I graduated with a BS in a class of 15 from one of only two 4-year programs in the state at the time.

Digital x-rays are the biggest and best improvement. We use EagleSoft and the tool bar for the x-rays are the best . I just learned how to zoom in on a Panorex and it was clear enough to detect inter proximal decay.
