When to apply for job before moving

I’m moving from PA to FL, ideally by the end of November or December. When do you think a good time to start applying to jobs is? I don’t want to start too soon, and going down for a working interview isn’t really an option. I would assume most positions looking to have someone start within the next month or so. I am going to be looking ideally for a full time position. I want to find a definite job before we decide an exact area to live… so I don’t really want to wait a month before we move to start applying. Any ideas? Should I make a cover letter and include that I am moving from PA to FL?

This is a tough one because offices that are hiring need someone sooner than later in most cases. You could always explain that you are moving in November or December in your cover letter, but just realize that your resume might be passed over because of that. Many offices might not be willing or able to wait that long. I would think that the ideal time would be 2-6 weeks before you move. However with that said, without being able to do an in-person interview or working interview, it may be tough to find a permanent position before moving.

On a side note, don’t forget about temping. It might be easiest to temp once you move which will not only give you hours, but get your foot in the door at offices. I know this probably isn’t the answer you are looking for, but moving long distances and finding a job before you move can be difficult! Best of luck!

I don’t really want to move without a job, that is really scary to have no guarenteed income, but I may have to and just hopefully find some temp stuff. I haven’t really temped before and it makes me nervous. It’s like starting a new job every day. I think not knowing how to work their computer system and not knowing their x-ray system is what
freaks me out. I feel like it could put me behind on time all day, which would be so stressful at an office that I don’t know. I was talking to an efda and she said at their office when they use a temp, they don’t expect
much from them as far as the computer and x-rays- she said the assistants usually take or help with x-rays and as far as their computer the office doesn’t expect them to use and they would prefer they don’t if they aren’t comfortable with their system(at their office they use dentrix). I know temping can be helpful in finding a permanent position. Have you ever temped? What haveyour experiences been? Am i nervous over temping for nothing?
